For residents who have never explored the vibrant murals of Segundo Barrio, the Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority’s SunCycle Bike Share program is giving them a colorful way to do so on two wheels.
SunCycle was awarded a $4,300 mini-grant from the PeopleForBikes Foundation/Better Bike Share Partnership to celebrate the murals of Segundo Barrio with bicycles.
Local artists who created some of the most beloved murals in Segundo Barrio were invited to paint a bicycle resembling their original mural in the historic neighborhood.
The murals being celebrated with a bicycle are Quinto Soul THE REBIRTH by Bobby Lerma, Contigo/With You by Christin Apodaca, Caution:Children Crossing by Victor Mask Casas, Barrio Soul by Cimi (Jesus Alvarado), Sister Cities/Ciudades Hermanas by Lxs Dos, Para Nosotros (For US) by Blaster (Martin Zubia) and Sagrado Corazón by Francisco Delgado.
Each of these artists was given a bicycle to paint reflecting the meaning and beauty of their individual mural.
“The goal of this project is to engage El Pasoans with Segundo Barrio and the community to see the art that has long-represented the vitality and heart of this historic neighborhood,” said Raymond Telles, Executive Director of Camino Real Regional Mobility Authority.
“The bikes will remain in the area as mobile art pieces, and we encourage the public to ride and explore.”
